Dental Veneers For That Hollywood Smile

Dental veneers can transform a smile into something really special, a white uniform set of teeth that people will envy.  However, the procedure is not as straight forward as some cosmetic dentists may have you believe.  Your teeth must feel comfortable and do the job they are intended for; to bite and chew food.  To do this job properly they must be properly aligned and if you have any cavities, periodontal disease, or an improper bite, then these issues must be addressed before proceeding with veneers.  The most common reason that a veneer comes off is because of an improper bite but if you are prepared to address any corrective work before veneers are fitted then they should last at least 10-15 years without problem but our dentist will advise specifically relating to each individual case.

So the sort of smile improvement you could enjoy are shown in the examples below (these were both treated by Dr Chatha):

Veneers Procedure

In order to ensure comfort which means that your teeth should both look and feel great after veneers the first issue as we have said above is to address any corrective work.  Once that is done then fitting veneers is fairly straight forward.  Your teeth will be prepared by grinding off a small amount of enamel which enables the veneer to be properly bonded with each tooth.  The veneer itself is a wafer thin, semi-translucent facing which can be shaped so that any gaps between your teeth are filled in but other than that they should be of the same general height and width of your existing teeth.  Dental veneers are durable, stain-resistant, and natural looking. Most veneers are custom made of porcelain, designed specifically for your teeth and fabricated at a specialty dental lab.  Fitting is painless and straight forward but be prepared to smile a lot after this work, you will find it hard not to show off your new Hollywood type smile!

Types of Veneers

There are three main types of veneers on the market and these are:

  1. Composite Veneers
  2. Feldspathic Porcelain
  3. Pressed Emax Porcelain Veneers

1. Composite Veneers are made from a resin-based polymer material that is applied to the front of teeth to improve the look (colour and alignment) in much the same way as a porcelain veneer. Composites are lower cost than porcelain but don't last as long (typically 2-5 years).

2. Feldspathic Porcelain Veneers are made by a skilled ceramist who gets a precise outline from us in order to build up porcelain in layers to exactly match the model we provide. The porcelain is then cured and baked at a high temperature to form a perfectly shaped veneer that is then bonded by us to your tooth. It is because of the lengthy process that porcelain veneers cost more but the upside is that they last longer (typically 10-15 years).

3. Emax Porcelain Veneers are made by high pressure injection into a mould (which we make from your teeth) to produce a very thin veneer that is surprisingly strong and durable. Emax veneers are thinner than feldspathic venners and for this reason usually do not require teeth etching, as may be the case with standard porcelain. Emax have a superior look with a higher level of translucence offering a more natural looking tooth shade. Being the strongest type of veneer, we would expect Emax veneers to last around 15-20 years.

Veneers Cost

Veneers are a cosmetic dental treatment that is unique to each patient using custom design and fabrication and for this reason veneers cost in the region of £750 each.  Please keep in mind that you can get major improvements to the look of your teeth with just a few veneers, you certainly do not have to have a full set!  It may be that you will also require a porcelain crown or two and perhaps other corrective treatment before veneers are fitted in order to build that perfect smile.
